I have spent many years searching for Charles Manly, whom I affectionately called Chaplain Manly, even after he left the military. He tried to save me from myself when I was a young woman and even into my thirties. I was looking for him to tell him, "Thank you." Thank you for loving me more than I loved myself. Without you, I would have stayed lost. I mourn your loss and I wish I would have treated you better when you were trying to get me on the right track. I wish I would have showed you the gratitude I now feel in my heart. God bless you and your beautiful family. You made the world a better place.
Love always, Kathryn Kelly (Van Vliet)

It has been the greatest blessing of my life to be married to Charles Gibson Manly Jr., to be a part of the Manly family, to have raised a son and now a grandson with the Charles Manly name. But these last few months... It has been a profound honor to walk so closely with Charles and Martha through this difficult journey. I am so grateful to my Heavenly Father for the great blessings in these weeks, for bringing us even closer to each other and to Him. I will forever cherish the intimate conversations and spiritual experiences we have shared, I will hold close the gifts of this time. I celebrate a life well lived for the Lord, and I praise Him for the many ways Charles allowed his life to be used for God's purpose and glory. I know there will continue to be an abundance of fruit to come from Charles' life and his death. I will miss him. And. along with my own Daddy, I will see him again!

Martha and Family: We just learned of Charles's death by way of a message from Bob and Judy Ennis sent out over the retired army chaplains net by Chuck Gibbs. Please accept our condolences. We still think of times that we shared in the Canal Zone in the early '70s. We didn't realize that you are living in Florida. We live on the other side of the state in Ormond Beach. Prayers, Joe & Corrinne Stock

Sincerest sympathy to Martha, the Manly family, and close friends during this time of great personal loss. I had the honor to be Chaplain Manly's chaplain assistant in 1983 at Zoeckler Station chapel in Korea. As an UM PK, I was happy to have a UM chaplain as my boss. I have memories of flying in the helicopters with him to serve our MI troops stationed on the mountain detachments-to include an MP greeting with guns raised at us at Kwanju and Chaplain Manly telling me to step out of the bird - it was now the pilot's problem for validating wtih the wrong password...! There was also the issue of finally catching the elusive critter that chewed the wires on our chapel's Bose stereo speakers, ate rings around the altar candlesticks, left small brown "presents" on the piano for me to clean up, and traveled the piping through our office, the MP office, and dayroom to steal food. It, a 12" rat from nose to tail, was finally caught. There was always laughter in our office and the soldiers dropped in often to say hello to their chaplain. He continues to serve in the Army of the Lord.

Martha - we are all so very sad! Charles was a wonderful person - a good, honorable man and loads of fun (always the best wine, food and conversation). We will always remember the lazy Sundays spent in the Shadowtree Court Beergarden and know that he is now in the loving arms of our Lord. I am so sorry, Martha. You and Charles were truly soul mates and we can only imagine your deep sorrow....

Dearest Martha and family, I grew to know you and care about each of you through my communications with Charles. Though he & I had recently lost "touch", we spent many years piecing together the roots of the many branches of our family tree.
I understand how keenly you will miss his warm presence in your daily lives, but I know that his belief in the Lord has taken him home. He will suffer no more and will surely smile down on each of you.

How lucky we were, and how privileged, to have been able to know Charles. Because of his absolute modesty, his many achievements were never mentioned. He was truly a man of God, a man who made each encounter matter. He gave freely to those who needed help, and made certain he remained anonymous, because his reward was in the giving. A truly "good guy." He was a teacher, and a mentor, and someone I was able to talk to like a father. He was a good friend, and I will miss him, both at the Wednesday fellowship luncheons, and in my life. Godspeed, good friend. Heaven is richer with your spirit and your soul.

What a great guy! Charles will be missed by many. Not the least of these are his friends at "Boys' Club".He had a way of asking hard questions at our noon religion-based lunches. Because of his menu selection, he became known as "Chili Dog Chuck". Good man - great example.
Charles, join us again by inspiration.
