Obituary of Ronald W Rich

Former DuBois and New Castle, PA resident Ronald Rich, 86, died January 5, 2024 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida.

Ron was born on April 23, 1937 in New Castle, PA to Raymond and Mary Rich.

Ron graduated from New Castle High School.  He provided military service for over seven years in both the United States Marine Corps, and the Army of the United States.  He was a proud Slippery Rock University alum.

Ron utilized his Political Science degree to serve the public for many years.  He became Sandy Township Manager in 1986 and throughout his 14- year tenure took the stance that providing the Township with its own identity was his most important job.  An outspoken advocate for Sandy Township and its citizens, under his leadership, Sandy Township experienced growth.  Ron is quoted as saying, Managers receive too much credit, “as he can only accomplish what those around him contribute to his efforts and assist in his accomplishments.”

Ron was an avid sports-fan who played softball in his youth.  He was a member of several organizations throughout his life.  During retirement, Ron was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Elks Lodge, and LaCasa Veterans.

Ron is survived by his wife, Nancy (North Port, FL); step-daughter, Tonya Mauk; step-son, Todd (Katherine) Maczaczyj (DuBois, PA); brothers, Raymond (Barbara) and David Rich; sister-in-law Nancy Rich (New Castle, PA), step-grandchildren, Daniel Dettinburn (Murrieta, CA), Paige (Rick) Arredondo (Rockton, PA), Leah Rota (DuBois, PA), 2 great-grand daughters, and many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; his mother, Mary; and a brother, Donald of New Castle, PA.

Ron enjoyed serving his community as township manager and often recalled stories of his time in the DuBois area.  In lieu of flowers, friends may honor Ron through donations to Sandy Township Recreation Park a project which was near and dear to his heart.  Checks can be mailed to Sandy Township, 1094 Chestnut Avenue, DuBois, PA.  Please note the Memorial in the memo section.  Military services will be scheduled at a later date.
