Obituary of Alexander Elmes

Alexander J. Elmes, 80, of Englewood and formerly of Indianapolis, IN died Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Englewood Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born on December 20, 1927 in Staten Island, NY. Alex was a veteran of WW-II serving in the US Navy. He was a graduate of the Indiana University. He was an accountant for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at the main office in Indianapolis and also owned and operated the Elmes Package Liquor Store in Princess Lake, IN. He has been a governor of the IN Lions, President of Holiday Estates for two years and a member of the Edgewater Club. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Trinity Church in Edenbury, IN and St. Francis of Assisi Church in Englewood and a member of St. Monica's Church in Indianapolis. He loved playing cards and had his masters in bridge, enjoyed boating, fishing, the beach, golfing and received trophies in shuffle board. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree, a life member of the VFW and helped out scout troops and was an order of the arrow himself. He was a fantastic cook with a great appreciation for food and even owned a restaurant at one time. Survivors include his wife of 60 years; Ruth: six children Carol (Dr. Jeff) Ferguson of Zionsville, IN., Diane (Marty) Henry of Rotonda West, Dr. George (Vicki) Elmes of Zionsville, IN, Paul (Mindy) Elmes of Indianapolis and Englewood, Alexander (Patti) Elmes of Charlotte, NC and Anthony (Tammy) Elmes of Yockey Estates Mitchell, IN. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; (Carol's) Ben, Adam, Laura Fergeson, (Diane's) Matthew (Nicole), Mark (Amber), Michael (Katie) Henry, (George's) Kristen and Daniel, (Alex's) A.J., Joey and Sam, (Tony's) Lance, A.J. and Cora and one great grandchild Emily Grace Henry. He has one sister in law Nancy of Grand Island, NY (his brother Robert passed away two months ago), two nephews; Patrick and Greg. four step grandchildren Andy, Nathan, Brian and Gabriel and eight step great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 5265 Placida Rd. Grove City, FL 34224 with a luncheon and receiving of friends to follow in the Church Hall immediately after Mass. Burial will take place in Millhousen, IN at a later date.
