Obituary of James Thomas Hogan

James "Jim" Thomas Hogan passed away on Friday February 10, 2023. He was born on July 24th, 1948, in Chicago, IL to the late James E. and Martha F. Hogan. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Judith Elizabeth, and is survived by his sisters, Joanne Gustafson and Jean Hettel. He was beloved "OG" to Carrie Ann Smith; and Cara Rose Michalek. He also leaves five nephews, Mike and Tom Gustafson, Ross, Eric, and Nick Hettel; two nieces, Sheri Gustafson and Kris Brynteson; three great nephews, and one great niece. Jim grew up in Chicago with his three sisters where their adventurous spirits often led to great adventures and humorous misadventures. A graduate of Lane Tech, he was awarded an appointment to Annapolis and attended there for one year before joining the Reserves. Jim later received his degree from Winthrop University and was awarded numerous certificates of recognition during his careers in telecommunication, medical imaging, and banking. "The Siren Call of Mother Ocean" was strong in Jim and urged on by his love of the sea, Jim followed a path south living for 19 years on his sailboat the Jolly Mon until coming back to dry land in Englewood, Florida. However, Chicago never left his blood and like his father, Jim was a die-hard Cubs and Bears fan. Even in Florida, he proudly displayed his beloved Chicago teams. Jim was a passionate, generous, and caring person who cherished his friends and family. His great loves were his daughter, Carrie, and his grand-daughter, Cara Rose. Separated by circumstance, he was able to reconnect and celebrated every moment he had with them. In his own words, "family is everything," and he traveled each year back to Illinois to be with his family and cold weather friends. Jim gave a piece of himself to all he knew whether through his stories, his cooking, a good cocktail or glass of wine, his laughter, or his photographs. Jim saw the world through the lens of his camera and was able to not only see the beauty in nature and the world around him, but to share it with others. He was an inspiration to many, and his sense of humor became legendary. He took joy in the joy of others and his kind heart was apparent in all his interactions, and especially in his love for his dog, Sallie O'Malley. We celebrate Jim's life and the blessing we were given in knowing him.
