Obituary of Bertrand Morris Cass

Bert Cass, III, was only 55 years old when he passed away suddenly on August 30th, 2021. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 22, 1965 and after graduating from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1990 and getting married in January 9, 1993, we travelled to Maine where he started his career as photojournalist. Always game for the next challenge, he worked in Gadsden, Alabama at a newspaper before moving to Englewood, Florida where we bought our first and only home and have lived so happily for the past 24 years. Bert excelled in most everything he attempted from athletics, acting, cooking, and Who-Datting. He was driven to learn which makes it no surprise that Bert found his professional calling in 2007 when he took another chance in life and became a high school teacher. His impact on the students at Port Charlotte High School, Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School, and most recently as my fellow Manta Ray at Lemon Bay High School, is a testament to all that Bert represents: hard work, risk, kindness, strength, humor, and most of all an infectious exuberance for life. It was often said that Bert never met a stranger. Nothing could be more accurate. He has shared a pint and a laugh with people all over the globe during our travels and has entertained our friends with his storytelling and mouthwatering meals. He is looking down on us beaming that his existence has been the source of so much joy and inspiration. How powerful, Bert. We love and miss you so much. Bert leaves behind his wife and soulmate ∞, Bonnie Powell. He also leaves behind a large and loving family: His father, Bert Cass, Junior (m. Julie). His mother, Loretta Beverly Cass. His sister Nicole Hingle (m. Ken). His son, Beau Michael Cass (m. SarahBeth), and two gorgeous grandchildren, Lola Rita and Luke Jude. His aunt, Denise Lawless (m. Walter deceased), and cousin Stephanie Sharpe (m. Graham) and cousins Wade and Rosalie. His aunt, Diane Cass, and cousin Timothy Banfeld (m. Candace) and cousins Waker and Hagan. His aunt, Elizabeth Cass. His uncle, Paul Cass (m. Maureen). His aunt, Elena Cass, and cousins Nicholas, Claire, and Ashton. He is pre-deceased by his beloved grandparents, Bert Cass, Senior, and Rita Marie Cass who are with him now. A memorial service will be held for Bert's family and friends in New Orleans at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home when it is safe to do so. A Drew Brees Foundation donation opportunity in Bert's name is being established through the collaborative efforts of Lemon Bay students, Bert's family, and friends. The foundation donates to children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and provides opportunities to children in need. A celebration of Bert's life here in Englewood will be announced at a later date. Englewood Community Funeral Home with Private Crematory has been selected to handle arrangements.
