Bert was always a pleasant person with a twinkle in his eye that seemed like he was about to crack a joke. I don't know if that's really what he was like or if he just carried that 'twinkle' for other reasons. I feel honored to have experienced his Jambalaya, ate the King cake, & learned much about the Mardi Gras tradition.
I pray that his family can find some peace & comfort in knowing that he was well liked/loved by all that knew him.

Mr. Cass was the best teacher I've ever had. He was so intelligent, he was fantastic at teaching.. He could have made the most boring subject fun. Beyond that he was a teacher who actually cared about his students, and that was what made him so special. He introduced me to one of my favorite albums ever, and we bonded over music. I'll never forget how excited he was when I gave him a Led Zeppelin shirt for Christmas. He meant the world to me and a lot of other students and I just wish I could have seen him again before he passed. Rest in Peace Mr. Cass, the one true Renaissance Man.

I am grateful for having Bert in our lives and will cherish these memories. There could have been years between our visits, but he made it seem like it was just days. From a great sense of humor to a sensibility that connected with everyone, Bert was a person of the people - able to talk to anyone and impact them positively even in the shortest of conversations. Bonnie, we love you, you continue to be in our thoughts. We love you Bert...

Mr. Cass was my teacher for World History during my freshman year at FSWC. I enjoyed his class and have so many memories from it, especially when he would pick on me for my expressions (which was like every day)!! . Of course, I remember the constant jokes he would make and the upbeat music he would play as I walked into class each and every day. He truly has made an impact on so many people and he will not be forgotten. Thank you so much, Mr. Cass, rest in peace!

Mr. Cass was my teacher for World History as well as psychology and sociology in freshman year. I absolutely adored his psychology class and have so many great memories from it. I remember him crying with us as we all watched Dead Poet's Society. I remember him helping me to perfect my essays. Of course I remember his constant witty jokes he would make and the upbeat music he would play as I walked into class in the morning. He really helped me to be a better writer and fueled my passion for psychology. I am now majoring in psychology and plan on being a Psychologist. His course was the first ever psychology course I had ever taken, and I am so glad. He truly has made an impact on so many people and he will not be forgotten. Thank you so much Mr. Cass, rest in peace.

I was a former student of his at FSWC. I will NEVER forget the absolute ray of light he IS. Whenever I was visibly distraught for whatever reason, he would always point to me in from his desk and say "Are we feeling some salsa today?," then would proceed to play the queen, Celia Cruz. He'd dance, laugh, smile in front of the class. "How do you pronounce that New York Representative lady? The one with lipstick?" I would respond "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez!" Then there was always the rebuttal of her name purposely mispronounced. Gumbo, New Orleans, Salsa, ABBA, Adele, AND ROCKING THE CASBAH! Que Descanses en Paz, Mr. Cass. We miss you :(

We moved to Englewood 10 years ago. Bert and Bonnie lived across the street and were two of the first people we met. We enjoyed talking football and shared some meals and drinks. Bert had an infectious personality and was fun to be with. We were looking forward to many more shared laughs and stories. As Wisconsinites and Packer season ticket holders we had a friendly rivalry with Bert and his Saints. This Sunday when the Packers and Saints play in Jacksonville we will root for Bert's Saints in honor of him.

Mr. Cass was my 9th grade World History teacher and the best teacher I've ever had. He had a way of explaining complex topics and made it easy to understand. I remember when I had to do a presentation in class and I was so extremely nervous and when I was up in front presenting, I kept on looking over at Mr. Cass and he kept assuring me that I was going to be fine. When he graded our presentation, he gave me an 84% B which I was happy about but then the next day he changed my grade from the 84% B to a 96% A and I was confused as to why he did that so I went up to him at the beginning of class and I asked him and he told me that I was smarter than I portrayed myself to be and that I did extremely well on my presentation on the fact that I presented based off of memorization and not looking at the board the entire time and that I can accomplish a lot of things in the future if I put my mind to it, I tried to hold back my tears when he told me this because it's hard to find a teacher that cares that much for their students. He always had the funniest jokes and stories and would always have an answer to my stupid questions. I wish I got the chance to thank him one last time and let him know how much of an impact he had on my life. Every time I start to doubt myself about something, I always remember what Mr. Cass told me that day in class. Mrs. Powell, I never got the chance to meet you but Mr. Cass always talked about you and how amazing you are, he loved you so much and will always be with you. Thank you Mr. Cass for everything, may you Rest in Peace.

Mr. Cass was my World History Honors teacher. He was a tough but fair teacher. He helped improve my writing. Without him, I would be struggling in my college courses, but he helped me improve my writing a lot. He allowed me to be more efficient as a student and is one of the few teachers who truly prepared me for college classes. I hope the best for his friends and family members, and may God be with him.
He would make jokes that would lighten up the mood of the classroom. He was a good listener and focused on making sure students understood him.
All prior and current students send their utmost regards to the friends and family of Mr. Cass.

I've just briefly met Bert & Bonnie at open house as they are my son's teachers. The 14 days that Mr. Cass taught 2nd period AP Human Geography was always a highlight to my son's day. He actually enjoyed participating in Mr. Cass' passionate discussions. Mr. Cass enjoyed sharing his wisdom with his students. What makes it so painful for us is that Mr. Cass had the whole school year mapped out and even had plans to travel after retirement. My son would often see Bert & Bonnie together between bells since their classrooms are only 2 doors apart. Its obvious to me that they share a love so great that most relationships could only be envious of. My son has decided to stick with the class to honor Mr. Cass and hopefully make him proud. May everyone find peace.

I was a student of Mr. Cass's in 2013 at FSW (Edison) Collegiate High School.
Mr. Cass was my High School Psychology, Sociology, AP Human Geography teacher and Key Club advisor. The most unique teacher that left a positive lasting impact on many. The only teacher who would let me turn in assignments late knowing that I needed a day or two to "tweak" and "perfect" my paper or project because I was drowning in a college student as a 10th grader work load (later to find out I had ADHD but I didn't know that then). He would let me email him several drafts offering input before he would actually accept the best paper he knew I could write to grade. He actually appreciated knowing that I spent extra time trying to make the project the best I could and actually kept 3 of mine to use as examples which I don't think any of my other teachers ever did. When I read this, I was in shock. I was actually telling a story of him last week. Cass sacrificed all he had to his students as far as knowledge and resources. One of the few that could articulate a single concept multiple ways for different types of learners. A great storyteller, he would tell us his stories of flying to NOLA to watch the Saints play, and he would take the red eye home and be back teaching several hours later. I don't know any other teacher/professor who was able to pull off all that he did and still be one of the best in his profession.

Bonnie, You will continue to learn of Bert's light and how it's impacted so many! May that light comfort you in this unimaginable journey moving forward.
The difference he made will always matter.
For me, Bert showed up in the 90's -first on the street, photographing a parade or something that I was involved with, while I was teaching photography at PCHS. I was always looking for community connections, so made one with him- and he came in and did a round table with my photo students at PCHS, all about photojournalism, his work, his images and the stories behind them! He challenged them with conversation, questions, and again, the amazing stories behind his well crafted and captured images.
Then when he came on board teaching at PCHS, for years, students were drawn in and changed by his engaging style. The photo I shared on the photo wall here is the result of a focused young person's interest in such a powerful, positive role model in the classroom.
Once he moved on to FSWCHS, then my daughter Lila was his student! What a great relationship builder Bert was- which as we know, leads right to building great students. Those connections are everything. He was able to connect with everyone.
It will always matter.
All in between, we would all see each other a music events, festivals, and just enjoying the good life together.
Sending all of the family so many thoughts of love and peace. Hoping that hearing from some of us will bring a little comfort. A life worth celebrating, Bert Cass.

Bonnie,
My heart aches for you. Sorry to steal a quote but behind every great man is a greater woman... Bert was GREAT and that is a testament to you.
Looking back at the PCHS years, Bert's passionate approach to teaching was inspiring. He made me want to do better. Bert didn't allow students to "regurgitate" information. He forced them to struggle, to think, to process. I truly enjoyed working with him.
But as a Dad, I can't say or express how grateful I am that Bert was my son Nathan's teacher. As an educator I hope & pray that every student has the opportunity to get "THAT" teacher. THAT teacher that inspires and motivates and pushes. THAT teacher that makes you excited to come to school. THAT teacher that pushes you outside your comfort zone to do things you wouldn't normally do. I could go on and on and on...
Bonnie - please know that I will always be grateful for everything that Bert did for my son. He is a big part of why Nathan is the man he is today...
With sympathy & gratitude

I loved getting the pictures of whatever wonderful dinner you were preparing for a special event or just for you and Bonnie. You made me laugh so much with your impersonations of different people--GrandPa Bert's walk, Robin Williams and Martin Short just to name a few.
The photo you took at Graham and Stephanie's is the one I chose to frame. Much better than the one the official photographer took. You felt more like a little brother than a nephew. Put a good word in for me up there and will see you in the next life. You were amazing.
