A love letter to Mom,
Our mom defined the word optimism. Mom lived her life as though the glass was always half full and not half empty. Throughout our lives we frequently heard her say phrases that some may consider cliché like, "Pick your battles", "This too shall pass", "Look on the bright side", "It's only spilled milk", "Don't sweat the small stuff". Now only as adults, do we fully understand why she made that conscious decision to be an optimist and not sweat the small stuff. Mom had many painful and traumatic losses in her life from an early age. As a child, she witnessed her older, 20-year-old brother die quite unexpectedly after a blood test for the armed services. Mom saw her mother wearing the same black dress for years frozen in her grief and she frequently told us how that made an impact on her life. Mom again experienced the sudden loss of another brother in the prime of his life to mental illness. Then the ultimate loss for any parent the loss of a child to cancer. Mom knew how to put life's challenges in perspective because of her past. We learned how to grieve, have a disagreement with someone and experience a loss of some kind without getting swallowed up in the pain, hold a grudge or not being able to forgive. We learned how to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off and move forward. She said have a good cry, wallow a bit then gracefully move on. Our mother has taught us so many lessons over the years, however, the ability to keep moving in a positive direction when life keeps throwing hardballs is one of the most cherished lessons of them all.
We thank you for this valuable life lesson,
Love, Roberta, Angela Steve, Andrea, and Anita

I was so sorry to read of Mary's passing , I had the pleasure of meeting both your parents when I was Stephen's Reiki Hospice volunteer . They were such a joy to be with, always so patient and kind , you could really sense their deep devotion and faith . I was only with them a short time but they made a lasting impression on my heart . Growing up a few blocks from the Fortunato's in Rockville and seeing them at high mass on Sunday's at St. Mary's Church and becoming best friends with Anita, playing tennis, going to the beach, movies and later living in NYC together and going home for the holidays together, made me feel like a real member of the family. Mr and Mrs Fortunato were always so welcoming and I have admired them and the family they raised and the families their children have raised. It is a true legacy to their love and dedication. She will be missed along with her husband and my heart and hugs go out to their entire family.
