So many great memories with Gladys.
We first travelled down to Florida to meet her properly in the early late 80's. We didn't realise at that point what an interesting and delightful soul we were going to get to know. We became so fond of her over the years. She treated us like old friends right from the off, despite the difference in years and experience. Gladys had lived a life far away from the UK and she seemed so well travelled and worldly wise. We on the other hand were a couple of kids, (almost!) and so grateful for a place to stay after we'd travelled around San Fransisco, broke and in need of some comfort! She made us feel like we'd arrived home.
On one trip we flew into Miami from London just after Christmas with the intention of staying in the Keys over New Year and heading up to Gladys after that. We had made no further plans and had no idea how busy it was at the Keys; surprisingly we had nowhere to stay. We decided to drive straight to Gladys's house and called her to let her know. Around 6pm we made the quick call from the Keys.. 'Hi Gladys, we can't find anywhere to stay, so we'll head up now if that's ok? We'll be with you in a couple of hours'. Gladys's response was typically measured, 'Are you sure dear?!' she laughed!
We drove for a good six hours but Gladys was still up and ready to greet us with food and drink when we eventually turned up!
Gladys was very good at making her opinions known and we had so many entertaining evenings chatting and laughing into the early hours.
Tennis, we knew very little about compared to her but we learned a lot and never got in the way of her US Open or Davis Cup.
We learned how to make Fuzzy Navels, Margaritas, Tequila sunrises with some skill thanks to Gladys!
One summer, not so long ago, when we visited with our children who were 9 and 12 , Gladys bought non alcoholic Margarita mix for them.
After a couple of drinks neither of us could tell the difference, and for some reason both kids slept really well that night. They still talk about the good times they had with their great Aunt. Her Apple cake was divine and they adored her Rum Cake. We still have her recipe.
We also have Rummikub, a game that gave us lots of fun (and competition), when we were with her!
So much fun was had going on boat trips with Gladys; she never seemed to lose her joie de vivre and we all felt she was a genuine tonic to us all.
She did laugh at our unfamiliarity with the creatures inhabiting her house! Jude freaked out once at seeing a large house spider on the lanai wall late one night. Gladys sipped her drink and laughed saying, 'What? That iddy-biddy thing? I thought you meant the one behind you!' There was a much bigger version within 10 feet of where we sat, which Gladys thought very funny. She did like her animals though! She had a snake in the garage for a while and of course of her lovely cats.
We hope Mister is ok without her.
Dear heart, kind, clever Gladys.
We are grateful for the good times and the wonderful memories. Our love goes to Rob and all who will miss her.
Simon, Jude, Laurence and Josie.

As a child I always thought of Auntie Gladys as being adventurous and exotic. To have lived in Switzerland, Brazil and the USA was for me, exiting. I always looked forward to and enjoyed her visits to the UK. I have memories of my brother Mark and I, as young children, wearing a wig each, that were hers.
When Mum and Dad began going to Florida each year, I could see how much they enjoyed just spending time there, not just the sunshine, but Gladys' company.
1997 was our first trip to Florida, Disney first, but I personally remember the end of that holiday best - a week with Gladys. A beautiful 7 days spent exploring the area, relaxing on the beach and a little shopping. I fell in love with Englewood and considered myself so fortunate to have Gladys there. Later visits saw Daniel sleeping on the Lanai, Gemma in the front room and us in the spare room.
She was such good company. Interested in us as well as what was happening around us. She had opinions and was not afraid to say. She loved life, a good laugh and spending time with family and friends. I like to think I have some of her characteristics.
She will be greatly missed, the last of her generation. She is a tough act to follow.

We are very sad to hear that Aunt Gladys has passed away, how lovely to make it to 101. We kept in touch through Christmas cards and am going to miss all the news from her. Our deepest sympathy. Barbara and Ray
